COACHING AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT


Lominger’s tools were created for use by Human Resource professionals, coaches, mentors and feedback givers helping others work on their development.  The tools are also used by bosses, supervisors, and managers coaching someone who works with or for them, and by individual learners working on their own development.

We often refer to these tools as “Leadership Development for the Real World” because they permit motivated leaders to actually get better at these managerial competencies.  We’ve created over 850 development plans while working with leaders on two-year development cycles.  The end of each two-year plan marks the time for a new round of feedback, and one of the things leaders are most interested to learn is whether they showed improvement with the competencies in their last development plan.

From over a decade of experience with this process, we can say that motivated managers are usually pleased with the results they’ve achieved.  This is leadership development that actually produces positive results. 

Clarke presented the results of research on this work at the Academy of Management 2007 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.   What we found was that leaders improved on the competencies they selected for development in very significant ways, and that those improvements were sustained over time.  That research material will be published in a peer-reviewed journal in the second quarter of 2010, and we'll link it here when it's available.
